Jeanne’s Story:

In 2015, my husband described our son’s story and our family’s struggle with mental illness and substance abuse in the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

The story describes our loss of trust, paralyzing fear and ultimate healing as we slowly learned to let go of our son’s addiction and recovery and focus on ourselves. Since the story was published, we have been astonished at the numbers of people who identified with it. Jeff’s work won a 2015 Award of Excellence by the Atlanta Press Club. Since its publication, we have enjoyed opportunities to speak at many outreach and advocacy events.

Over three years ago, I was confronted with the spiritual, emotional and physical damage, depression, binge eating and alcohol were creating in my life. Through tough discussions with Jeff and a spiritual awakening, I became open to change and am thrilled that by applying the “one day at a time” concepts to my own life I have been in recovery since April 14, 2017.

Today, we continue to support our recovery and of those around us through participating in a variety of 12 step programs and advocacy activities.

Feeling encouraged by and grateful for the miracles I have seen in my life and those around me, I have become a Registered Horticultural Therapist through the American Horticultural Therapy Association and have recently joined their Board of Directors. I’ve been working as a Peer Support Specialist since
2020 and founded 12 Acre Farms the same year.
